Happy Monday,
Last week I had the incredible experience of staying the night at Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf. We saw so many cool birds and a few wētāpunga too. Sadly missed out on seeing any tuatara but we can’t have it all every time…
This week’s episode is a great recap of some of our experiences on the island but also a great introduction to an up and coming conservationist and the work he’s been doing at Great Barrier Island.
Have a listen to find out what birds we saw on Tiritiri.
This isn’t all that is to come from this magnificent island refuge. I had the opportunity to sit down with Jonathan Mower, a very knowledgable guide. That conversation is next on the list and will be out soon!

Mammalian predators are known to prey on more than just our native fauna. They will also predate other non-native species such as rabbits or exotic birds. Accordingly, sometimes people may be apprehensive to predator control if it is going to exacerbate the numbers of other unwanted species! Good news, though. A recent study has shown that the control of predatory mammals doesn’t seem to result in an increase in rabbit numbers. It appears that top-down predator control has little influence on the carrying capacity of rabbit populations. This is a positive step towards advocating predator control in areas where rabbits may be a bigger nuisance to the local community. Read here: https://doi.org/10.1071/WR24043
